ED AVIFAUNA SENSIBILE. IL CASO DEL PICCHIO NERO (DRYOCOPUS MARTIUS)

Summary The
protection of biodiversity is today a matter of primary importance also
for forest managers. Among the animal components of the forest ecosystems,
special attention is given to birds: some bird species, in fact, are very
sensitive to disturbance. Some actions to be made during silvicultural
operations, in order to protect susceptible birds, are briefly suggested
in this work; they range from
a schedule of works minimizing the disturbance up to the re-creation of
habitats for the involved species and more generally the re-naturalization
of the environment. Specifically, a survey done in the “Dolomiti
Bellunesi” National Park (Veneto Region, NE Italy) in order to define
the forest characteristics of Black woodpecker nesting sites is presented
in this paper. The characteristics of nesting trees and of nesting holes,
as well as the forest stand parameters in the circular areas around the
nest and in its surroundings, have been analyzed. Collected data show
interesting aspects about the preferences
of this woodpecker in the selection of the breeding site and, more
specifically, of the tree for the nest. Every sampled nesting site was
located in older portions of the woods, and the nesting tree almost always
was a beech. From the obtained informations some suggestions are derived
to guide silviculture and forest management in order to enhance the
conservation of this important woodland bird.
