Riassunto
Summary The
maintenance of the forest cover in a good functional state represents a
primary objective to pursue in a modern integrated management of natural
resources. It delineates intervention areas in which the silvicultural
activity is relevant and represents a fundamental tool to assure the
territory safeguard both through recovery of degraded areas and actions
aimed at forest improvement. This has led in the past to reforestation of
large areas, once called mountainous
reclamation, while currently, beyond reforestation, it has to be
performed also forest management through sustainability criteria so as to
make compatible the use of resources with soil conservation. In the
present work it is described how strategies are applied to increase
effectiveness of the forests on the control of surface hydrology and
hillslope erosion through various silvicultural treatments, often
contemporary required in the same catchment basin. The restoration of
degraded areas or of surfaces unusable for agriculture through
reforestations, the renaturalization of forest systems both in structure
and functionality, the improvement of coppice forests, post fire reconstruction,
the attenuation of degradation causes and mainly the silvicultural
prevention of fires, represents useful tools: a) to intensify the
hydrological efficiency of forest covers and the effectiveness on the
control of soil erosion; b) to reduce the entity of the causes that
contribute at triggering dangerous phenomena; d) to increase the
functionality of hydraulic works.
