Riassunto
Summary Forest
practices are considered a fundamental tool to combat desertification.
Rational forest management and reforestation were actually born from the
observation that the uncontrolled use of forest resources inexorably
shifts into degradation processes that, in arid and semi-arid areas, bring
to land sterility and desertification. Degradation processes in forest
ecosystems start with the reduction of crown cover and develop through
structural and compositional simplification, gradual loss of biological
productivity and increase of soil erosion. As a result, ecological
efficiency of the affected forest stands is reduced and their functions in
the landscape (soil protection, water regulation, atmospheric carbon
sequestration, biodiversity conservation, wood and non-wood product supply)
are eroded. Sustainable forest interventions can be exploited as suitable
measures for both the mitigation and the prevention of degradation factors,
and both to foster existing forest patrimony and to expand it by
reforestation. In this perspective, an overview about the role and the
responsibility of silviculture to face desertification risks under the
environmental and socioeconomic conditions of
