Summary The
primary production of temperate woodland ecosystems is discussed as a food
resource available to the forest fauna. Altitude distribution of woods,
cycle of seasons and unusual climate changes have been considered. The
supply of food was distinguished on the basis of its utilization by the
different ecological-functional types of animals: cell-, xylem- and
phloem-sap, green organs, reproductive structures, woody parts s.l.
and litter; obviously, if there is an undergrowth, its vegetation is also
to be under examination. As far as the secondary production is concerned,
the main groups of consumers of silvicultural importance are insects,
birds and mammals. The insects convert the primary production of forests
into food for many animals, chiefly for a large number of birds. Several
species of seed feeding birds affect the composition and distribution of
some types of woods. Mammals are to be considered as consumers enhancing,
completing, or replacing the function of birds; sometimes they act as
insects. Among
the woodland soil animals, arthropods and earthworms, the well-known
decomposers of litters, are the last animals utilizing the energy in food
chains. The freshwater fauna plays a role in the cycle of the organic
matter produced by its host ecosystems, too.
